Researchers from the Washington School of Medicine have determined that babies will die of SIDS because of the way they slept and the infant bedding they slept on.
More ratings are needed and guidelines to follow for infant’s bedding and crib mattress. Polystyrene filled cushions can lead to accidental suffocation. These have already been banned. Infants sleeping on their backs are also safer than sleeping on their stomachs because accidental suffocation and CO2 is less likely to build up.
Infant’s bedding and crib mattresses need to be firm and not too soft. If an infant lifts their head and a little indentation remains, the CO2 can remain built up there and they can suffocate. Keep all things away from the infant’s face including comforters and baby quilts. The theory is that soft infant’s bedding and too soft of crib mattresses can lead to problems and the trapping of CO2. If the infant sleeps on the back and the crib mattresses are relatively firm, this greatly reduces the risk of SIDS.
